Density Ranges In Printing Ink On Paper
To read ink density, calibrate the reflection densitometer as specified by the manufacture. Then it should be zeroed to the substrate that will be used for the actual press run. One advantage of the gravure printing process is that it is able to obtain high quality results on inexpensive substrates. The limited whiteness, brightness, PH value and other factors contribute to the lower cost of the substrate. For this reason, however, it is all the more important that the densitometer be adjusted to the substrate.
It is possible to obtain different density readings from a wet ink film and a dry ink film, and from glossy and matte finish paper stock. Several densitometer manufacturers use a polarizing filter to eliminate the difference. It is common to read dry ink films to avoid any possible shifts in gloss.
