Flatbed scanners will still see significant improvements over the next 5 years. They will take full advantage of the improvements in components mentioned earlier, such as faster and more sensitive sensors, better light sources, better and cheaper electronics. Their biggest advances will be in speed, improved cost/ performance ratio,ease of use and reliability.
Use of area sensors will begin to appear over time, as the resolution of these components increases and prices drop.
Will continue to be the dominant digital input device for the graphic communications over the next 5 to 10 years. Bottom line is that the flatbed scanner will continue to dominate as image capture devices for professionals over the next 5 to 10 years.
